Information For Stilts

People should familiarise themselves with stilts before attempting to use them. They should understand and learn how they operate and the theory behind the use of them.

It is recommended that mounting stilts is completed with the assistance of the support of a wall or person.

For low level stilts dismounting without assistance can be achieved by following the steps below in the order given.

      I.        Removing the straps from one stilt in the correct order

II.        Making a check that the ground where the other stilt is will not cause it to slip

III.        Making a check that the ground behind will not cause a foot slip in step VI

IV.        Holding the unstrapped stilt with one hand

     V.        Making a check that the area behind is clear

VI.        Leaning back gently and placing the unstrapped foot on the ground

Straps MUST be done up in the order of leg supports first then foot supports. These should be appropriately tight to stop slipping.

Straps MUST be undone in the order of foot supports first then leg supports.

Stilts MUST be set up properly for the geometry of the user.

A person that is not considered “passed” may use stilts if, and only if, the following conditions are obeyed:

  • The user MUST have knee guards and elbow guards on before mounting
  • The user MUST have wrist guards on
  • The user MUST have one spotter
  • This spotter should be a committee member and should be passed for stilts.
  • This spotter MUST be knowledgeable regarding stilts and be able to provide you with accurate information about the use of them
  • This spotter MUST have the ability to stable the user should they feel uncomfortable or make a mistake

Terminology
The word “should” is used where this is the correct procedure to be followed.  The word “MUST” is used to demonstrate a requirement.
More information on understanding passing for skills can be found by contacting your Fire Officer.
